In the last of my "catch-up" posts, I've chosen a fairly bland beer.  According to 1001 Beers, it's Austria's single best-selling beer and has been brewed since 1492.  So yeah, there's some history there, and some cultural importance, but compared to the bourbon stouts and IPAs I've been drinking, this lager really does nothing to set itself apart from the crowd.  To be honest, it reminds me a bit of the Samuel Smith Organic Lager I had over the weekend.  It was a new Samuel Smith beer I hadn't seen before and I know that I have at least 6 other Samuel Smiths to try, including 5 from the book of 1001.  Both were pretty watery, bland, and very basic.  I had really expected more, but like I said, I understand the historical and cultural significance, but that's about all you'll get from this one.

My apologies for the brevity, my next post for the 3rd should have a bit more.

My review, cross-posted at RateBeer.com:

Stiegl Goldbräu from Stiegl

Aroma: 3/10
Appearance: 3/5
Taste: 3/10
Palate: 2/5
Overall: 7/20

Rating: 1.8 / 5.0

Bottle from Total Wine and More. Pours golden yellow, slight head, no retention or lacing. Aroma is pretty basic - malt and hops. Brewed under the German purity laws, there isn’t much here. Body is watery and fizzy. Flavor is also watery, malty, Finishes a bit dry, easy to drink (mostly watery) and nothing special. I guess if we have our Bud here, they can have their Stiegl there in Austria (best selling beer).
